There’s a reason why the Waverly Inn NYC has stayed open despite the challenges of the last two years. It was much hyped when it first opened back in 2006 but it has proved to have staying power. It remains a great scene today and is one of our go-to spots when we are home in NYC.

Opened in 2006 by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter this attractive and hip restaurant is housed on the ground floor of an elegant townhouse. It also features a heated outdoor garden area.
The atmosphere at Waverly Inn NYC is lively and vibrant. It is a popular celebrity hang out so you’ll have a chance to see anyone, from Taylor Swift out with her girlfriends to Hollywood actor Ron Pearlman.
But the atmosphere alone can’t keep people coming back – the food here is a big draw. Waverly Inn’s food is classic, hearty American food with a contemporary French influence.
What to order at Waverly Inn NYC
The iconic chicken pot pie is a speciality here and is rightly one of the most popular dishes on the menu. The roasted Amish chicken served with black trumpet mushrooms is also delicious.
Seafood options include sea scallops and Truffle celery root puree cooked in a iron skillet or tasty Baltimore crab cakes. When we dine here, we can’t pass up an iceberg wedge side salad served with bacon and cherry tomatoes. No one really does a proper buttermilk and blue cheese dressing nowadays except for Waverly Inn. The menu also includes classic comfort food such as macaroni cheese but don’t dismiss this make at home dish. This mac and cheese will be the best you’ve ever had.
Leave room for one of the fabulous desserts such as triple chocolate Pot de Crème served with violet candy.
There is a good cocktail menu as well as an extensive whisky choice for an after dinner night camp.

If you are missing Graydon Carter at Vanity Fair and just want to feel closer to him, then this is the place to come. It is an ideal restaurant to choose for special occasions such as first dates, birthday celebrations, dinners with friends, or anytime you just want a classic New York City scene.
The restaurant is open for dinner service 7 nights a week from 5pm until 10pm. At weekends, it is open for an additional brunch service from 11am to 5pm.
The Atmosphere
The atmosphere is kind of like the Polo Bar in the West Village, but here, you can drop by or make a reservation without having to know someone. The Waverly Inn decor makes it feel like a trendy private club. The dining room is decked in dark wood with dimly lit red banquettes and old-school pictorial artwork on the walls. There are roaring fires in red brick fireplaces. It all combines to create a cozy yet elegant old world charm.
Expect packed tables every night. I recommend, if you’re lucky, requesting a seat by the fireplace in the back of the restaurant.
On a scale of 1/10, I rate the atmosphere here as an 11.
