Why we like it: Two words: infinity pool. If that’s all you ever knew of Splendido, you would pretty much have a big part of the essence of staying in one of the most beautiful hotels in Italy. It’s one of the most romantic places in the world.

It is part of the Belmond portfolio, which means that it is inevitably going to be nothing short of exquisite, authentic, romantic, and everything that a vacation for two should be made of. Or in the case of Madonna, a vacation for an entire entourage. The hotel is spectacular enough that even Beyoncé and Jay-Z left their yacht to hang out at the hotel.
Belmond Splendido is an old restored convent that’s set into a cliff, so the views of the Ligurian region from the hotel simply cannot be beat. And the food is incredible: if you never leave the hotel, could eat only there, and never even think twice. La Terazza, Chuflay Restaurant, and the Pool Grill have you covered with authentic trofie, pesto pasta, focaccia bread that is off the charts, and anything else authentically Italian you could conceivably fathom. Any diet you think you might be on, you may as well leave at home from the get-go.
What to know: The rooms are set to the original footprint of the building, which used to be a convent. The previous residents of the building lived modestly. So, if you’re looking to get a larger room, make sure you book one of the suites.
There is little to no nightlife in the area (although, you’re not really in Portofino for the nightlife). But every night, there is a pianist at the hotel bar with whom guests consistently sing along every night, which is a cozy, wonderful environment.
