The Hotel: The Phoenecia
Why we recommend it:
Malta, the destination known for its hidden beaches, adventurous diving hotspots, and scenic views, was previously only missing a good place to stay. That is, until The Phoenecia, which is now hands down, where to stay in Malta.
Located in the heart of Valletta, with the best views of Grand Harbor (a 16th-Century UNESCO World Heritage site), and a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, The Phoenecia is the first mover into luxury accommodation in Malta. Malta may be on the path to becoming the next San Tropez someday (ask the Beckhams who are rumored to have an apartment on the island). But for now, it’s still a secret. Even at peak season, some rooms go for as little as $240 per night, which makes it yet another reason The Phoenecia is where to stay in Malta now.
With a circular Palm Court lounge, part of the 1930s structure of glass and pink, blue, and white colors, the historic interiors lead out to a garden of kumquat trees and lush greenery landscaped across seven-and-a-half acres in the heart of the city.
What to know:
Although The Phoenecia is the nicest in Malta, it is not the same white-glove service you might expect from more established cities like Paris and London. The service may not be the most lavish, but it is sincere. The authentic Maltese hospitality makes the experience. Most of the staff are local so you’re getting the small boutique experience. The rooms are lovely, but they are modest in size. So opt for a suite if you want room to spread out. The best rooms overlook the harbor, and if you get a terrace, you can sit with a bottle of wine to watch the sunset.
